Legacy Valuing Tradition is formulated with the same, unrefined and natural ingredients that have been nourishing man’s best friend for many years.   Please read why we think we are unique and how we formulate our products for the best complete and natural nutrition.

First and foremost, we are a family owned and operated company now into our third generation of making pet food.  We care about your pet because we know the love and companionship they give; we get the same from our very own dog, Bella (the golden retriever featured throughout the website).

Bella

Our facility and offices are in rural Ontario, northwest of Waterloo and we access most of our fresh ingredients locally. Our local economy is supported through employment and community activities and this is an important part of doing business for us.  We have good working relationships with our suppliers and are familiar with their facilities.  It is vital that we know the source of our ingredients and this insures the safety of our products.  We know this is important to you, too.

In the pet food industry, there is much discussion about individual ingredients but in reality, it is the overall balance of the finished diet that will affect your pet’s performance.  No one ingredient can be the magic solution if the diet is not balanced properly.  There can be over 40 nutrients in a formula that require balancing simultaneously.   Generally, when people talk about pet nutrition, the discussion is limited to protein and energy (calorie) sources.

Protein:   Fresh chicken, lamb and ocean salmon are the primary protein sources in all our pet products. These proteins undergo a unique drying process prior to cooking.  Other companies may also use lamb or chicken as primary ingredients but this can be misleading.  Without the process of drying meat first, substantial moisture contributes to the total weight of ingredients.  This weight is lost by evaporation in the cooking process that all extruded pet foods undergo.   Legacy Valuing Tradition products have optimum protein levels of 26 – 28%. It is not natural and may be harmful for your pet to consume higher levels of protein.  It is no different than us eating a dozen eggs for breakfast!   It is widely understood that ‘fast-grow’ or high protein formulations are dangerous, as evidenced by increasing cases of joint and skeletal problems in young dogs.

Grains:   Three types of high quality grains are used:  brown rice, dehulled oats and dehulled barley.  These unrefined grains release energy slowly and keep pets feeling satisfied longer.

Omega 3 & 6 Fatty AcidsLegacy Valuing Tradition products are an excellent source of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids using a combination of fish and flax seed oil.  This optimum balance of fatty acids is great for your dog’s heart, skin and immune system and is even known to keep them happy by boosting their brain power!

Hold a piece of Legacy Valuing Tradition kibble in your hand and you will immediately notice that it is rough.  This is because we coarse grind every heart shaped kibble.  When dogs chew this rough kibble, it creates a natural abrasion essential for keeping teeth and gums clean.  It’s like having a built-in toothbrush! Legacy Valuing Tradition food passes slowly through the intestinal tract making your pet feel fuller for longer periods.  This leads to increased absorption with smaller, firmer stools.  These qualities reduce the danger of obesity and the stress that comes with constantly feeling hungry.    We know pets come in large and small sizes and for that reason, we make two distinctly different kibble sizes.

All of our formulas are preserved naturally using botanical ingredients like rosemary extract, garlic and herbs.   We do not use artificial colouring, flavours or additives which can give some pet food products a shelf life of over one year.  What you see in each kibble is the result of extensive testing and research to make a highly palatable product.  The Flaherty family German shepherd pet dutifully helped to taste-test most products and can be seen in the ‘About Us’ page.  All Legacy Valuing Tradition ingredients and finished products are regularly tested and analysed.  We are HACCP certified and monitored by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to maintain our high standards of quality control.

Look at our packaging.  Convenience is in the bag with smaller, easier to carry sizes.  We offer 3.6 and 11.5 kg heavy plastic bags with handles, zipper tops and flat bottoms.  (Kitten and cat food bags are sized 1.3, 2.5 & 5 kgs).  Sample sized bags are available in many stores.  18 kg kennel pack bags are available upon request and we offer a kennel and breeder program.   Warehousing of finished product is minimal which guarantees freshness and palatability.  Pets love it!
